Summary

This workshop will provide information on the recent landmark changes to the ACT Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Act which allow for a Change of Sex to be recorded without any requirement for medical intervention, as well as allowing for a non-bonary sex marker to be recorded where requested.

As well as addressing the specific changes that were made, the workshop will also provide a history of the ten year process that was undertaken in order to obtain these changes. This will include a discussion of the different strategies that were employed, counter arguments to commonly expressed concerns, and areas where the ACT law could be further improved.

The workshop will then invite participants to share information from their jurisdictions about the current status of law reform work in this area.
Participants will also be encouraged to work in small groups to develop strategies and prioritise areas of focus for encouraging other jurisdictions to address the human rights issues that still exist in all other Australian jurisdictions where no non-binary option exists and where medical intervention is a pre-requisite to legally changing sex on birth certificates.
